Design Feature

Kyeol is made for three people to sit. Height is 42.cm, a standard measurement from the knee to the foot, allowing feet to touch the floor.

The bench is assembled by attaching curved strips onto the inner structure with screws, making it ideal for part(s) to be replaced easily or disassembled when moving.

The seat is curved for the bottom to nest down. Side is also curved for the legs to lean in. Having a space on the bottom of the bench allows feet to be tucked in comfortably.

Making Process

Curves are shaped using steam bending method. Oak is selected for its durable and flexible characteristics.

Two jigs that can bend four strips of wood were made. Each strips were left in the jigs for a week for the wood to settle in the bent form shape.

Finding The Perfect Curve

To find the most comfortable curve for the seat, various prototypes of seats with different curve patterns from scrap wood were made. Each prototypes can only seat one person at a time. They were used for people to sit and receive feedback. Eighteen people participated and asked to sit from five to fifteen minutes. This test gave better understanding in finding the correct angle of the curve.
